9 Of My Favorite Cook Books: Gathering Recipes for Fall, Winter & The Upcoming Holidays

~~~
So as we are once more forced to slow it down a bit, spend more time indoors trying to stay warm as it gets darker earlier and the days seem longer, as winter is nearing it’s time to go back into the kitchen once more. I love it when the seasons change as they remind me of how amazing it is to be alive.
This is the time of year I always love to ramble through my favorite cookbooks searching for some delicious “stick to your ribs” recipes that will be baked or simmered in a crock.
Some people love eating out and so do I sometimes but I believe there is nothing of better quality than a really delicious “home-cooked meal” as it makes “home” one of the best places I want to be in this entire world.
I tell you there’s nothing like down-home cooking as I love to make desserts like bread pudding, banana pudding, old fashioned peach cobbler or a from-scratch pound cake as my husband and I get together to prepare meals like red bean chili, brisket, beef BBQ ribs, baked macaroni and cheese, some hardy homemade soups and stews, chicken and dumplings, gravies, biscuits, cornbread, cabbage, plenty fresh collards, mustard’s and turnip greens, from my garden, fried whiting fish (the kind that curls) salmon and lasagna. These foods are always made with a lot of love. But it’s good to add a little variety to meals by checking out some cookbooks and so here are some of my favorite cookbooks.
1. Entenmann’s Big Book Of Baking is one of my recent purchases and I am looking forward to trying out a bunch of the recipes for the holidays. I told my husband we should start with the “Blueberry Sour Cream Loaf Cake” and the “The Sour Cream Muffins” as they caught my eye.
5. The Ultimate Casseroles Book by Better Homes And Gardens is turning out to be one of my favorite’s of the favorite’s because this book has so many recipes I’d love to try especially all of the different types of lasagna dishes. For instance, these recipes look so delicious… Mile High Lasagna Pie, Meat and 4 Cheese Lasagna, Chicken Lasagna, Turkey Spinach Lasagna Rolls, Lasagna Ole, Smoked Salmon Lasagna, Creamy Artichoke Lasagna Bake, and the Turkey Zucchini Lasagna. Also I want to try my hand at some of these…. the Best Potluck Potatoes, Baked Blueberry Pecan French Toast, Peach Crisp, Maple Bread Pudding with Pecan Praline, Warm Banana Bread Cobbler, Double-Crust Pizza Casserole, Eggplant & Beef Casserole, Mexican Rice & Black Beans, Pizza In A Bowl, Baked Butter Beans with Mustard, Mexicali Hamburger Casserole, Southern Grits Casserole with Red Pepper Relish, Egg & Bacon Casserole (with turkey bacon), Easy Shepard’s Pie (with ground Lamb) and the Cheese Burger & Fries Casserole is something I think my husband will love to try.
When I came into my womanhood it felt amazing because I was influenced by older woman like my mother, aunts, stepmother and other women in the neighborhood who were not by the standards of the world back then and now as beautiful, highly educated nor were they considered worldly women, but they were women who were grounded and rooted in who they were and used their role to the advantage of their families and others who needed them.
They were magical and amazing women that I feel the world does not know nor props up. But they were the kind of women who didn’t mind cleaning their homes and spending time in the kitchen making simple but delicious meals any day of the week and immediately afterwards they took out the time to pamper themselves by soaking in a bathtub with Calgon bath oil beads and applied some Jergens and some sweet-smelling oil all over their skin with a spritz of sweet-smelling perfume, polished nails and did their hair then they’d put on a pretty dress and apron. Those women were amazing to me and that’s what made all of our lives happy back then. They comforted us and they gave us love.
